Black-and-White on Bronson

There is a group of three homes on Bronson Avenue in Hollywood that stand out to me. They're not the Craftsmen that dot the neighborhood, just white clapboard houses that feel like they belong in a beach town back east. They also feel like they ought to be rendered in black-and-white. Working with the Nikon, this time I fiddled a bit more with the image in Photoshop to try and get a little more depth to the image. It looks better than the original, but somehow seems not quite there. Have generally shied away from Photoshopping (as I have cropping the film images), though whether that's because I fancy myself a purist or am just to challenged by the software I'm not sure.

Parade Season

Brought out the long lens to shoot a little at this past weekend's Hollywood Christmas Parade. The thing will be aired on a Sunday at noon in a couple weeks, and am anxious to see how they deal with the dissonance bound to come when night has fallen on the screen but it is sunny and 72 (as always) out the window.

Back at SCI-Arc

Had another occaision to head to SCI-Arc, and this time was better prepared. In the end, looking out from the installation seemed to me more interesting that trying to sort out all the whiteness inside.

On the Edge

I was downtown at SCI-Arc the other night, looking at architect Michael Maltzman's "Dark Side of the Moon" installation and wishing I'd brought a camera - a white room with a low, undulating ceiling pocked by holes to look up into the hidden area above. I did, though, have the Treo. The best image came not from a direct shot, but from the video screen that had been set up for overflow crowd attending a discussion of the installation.

On the Fence

Shot again in NoHo (which I think for the moment is spent as a subject), I'm on the fence about this one. I like the fading sign, the fact that the owner decided not to cover it with the new paint job, the shadow, the palm as an afterthought. And yet...

Downtown

Another from the days downtown, this one I think from Broadway.

Towering Inferno

The building at Sunset and Vine has fascinated for a long time. It was shuttered after a fire many years ago, then taken over by crackheads and finally sold for conversion into residences. It was sheathed for months in advertising while work went on inside - asbestos removal, I think. and the wrappers came off very recently. It's been standing there, a naked skeleton for weeks and I've been staring at it every time I pass, trying to figure out how to capture the see-through geometry of it. Now the glass curtainwall is starting to climb up, and I finally decided just to look up and shoot. Another Holga wonder - how did the camera decide to stay in focus for this one?

Typical

Another from the days downtown, shot in late summer and just recently returned from processing. I'm drawn to odd architectural and geometric images, have been since I took up photography more years ago than I care to remember.

Real and Imagined

I was initially drawn to the shadow and its connection to the palm looming behind the wall when I heard the plane coming by. The bird was a happy coincidence, but balances the aircraft nicely, I think. North Hollywood again.
